Top 3 batting performances of Allan Border in Tests

Legendary Australian cricketer Allan Border was born on 27 July 1955. Under his captaincy, Australia won their maiden World Cup in 1987. Border made his international debut in Test cricket in 1978 against England. He was primarily a left-handed batter but was also an effective part-time spinner.

Border represented Australia in 156 Test matches and scored 11,174 Test runs at an average of 50.56, including 27 centuries, two double centuries and 63 fifties. He has also taken 39 wickets in this format with his left-arm orthodox bowling. Allan Border played a captain’s knock to draw the second Test against India in the 1985 series. Batting first, England were bundled out for 262 and India took a huge lead by scoring 445 in the first innings. The hosts looked set to end up with a meager score in the second innings, but Border’s one-man show (163 off 358 balls) helped them reach 308. The match ended in a draw as the Aussie bowlers were unable to bowl out India.

Border registered his highest score in Tests during the second match of the 1987 New Zealand tour of Australia. Batting first, the Black Caps scored 485 before declaring. In reply, Australia smashed 496 on the back of Border’s brilliant double hundred (205 off 485). However, his valiant effort went in vain as the match ended in a draw.

Allan Border’s sensational knock in the first innings of the second Test at Lord’s played a key role in Australia’s thrilling four-wicket victory. In reply to England’s 190, the visitors amassed 425 runs, with Border being the top scorer with 195 runs. The hosts could only set a target of 127 runs, which the Aussie batters touched comfortably. It is noteworthy that Border remained unbeaten with 41 runs.
