Top 3 batters to watch out for in India vs West Indies T20I series 2026

Top 3 batters to watch out for in India vs West Indies T20I series 2026

The India vs West Indies rivalry will move into the shortest format when the two teams meet in a five-match T20I series, beginning on October 6 in Lucknow. After an entertaining ODI series, which West Indies finished with a win in the third match, both sides will now look to start afresh in the T20I format.

India will be led by Shreyas Iyer and have a strong batting group featuring Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube. West Indies, meanwhile, have plenty of power-hitting options, with Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford and Kamil Pooran among the players expected to play important roles.

The five T20Is will be played in Lucknow, Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru between October 6 and 17.

Here are 3 batters to watch out for in IND vs WI T20I series:

1. Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek Sharma is likely to be one of the biggest attractions of the series. The explosive left-handed opener has developed a reputation for taking the attack to the opposition from the first over and can change the complexion of a T20 match within the powerplay.

India’s T20I squad contains several opening options, but Abhishek’s ability to provide an aggressive start makes him a particularly important player for captain Shreyas Iyer. His combination of clean hitting, fearless strokeplay and ability to attack both pace and spin gives India a potentially devastating powerplay weapon.

The left-hander will also have an opportunity to establish himself further in India’s T20I setup. With the team continuing to build towards the next T20 World Cup cycle, consistent performances against West Indies could strengthen his position at the top of the order.

The challenge for Abhishek will be West Indies’ varied bowling attack. Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie can provide control with spin, while the visitors also possess several seam-bowling options.

If Abhishek survives the initial phase, he could potentially produce some substantial scores during the five-match series.

2. Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma is another Indian batter who could have a major influence on the series. The left-hander has become an important part of India’s T20I middle order and has the ability to adapt his game according to the match situation.

Unlike an opener whose primary objective is to maximise the powerplay, Tilak can control the innings through the middle overs before accelerating towards the end. His ability to play spin effectively makes him particularly valuable against a West Indies attack that includes Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie.

Tilak has also been named India’s vice-captain for the series, highlighting the confidence the team management has in his abilities. The updated India squad includes him alongside Abhishek, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and several other batting options.

One of Tilak’s biggest strengths is his ability to find boundaries without constantly relying on high-risk shots. That quality could prove crucial on larger grounds such as Lucknow and Ranchi, where rotating the strike could be just as important as clearing the ropes.

A productive series against West Indies could further cement Tilak’s position as one of India’s leading middle-order batters.

3. Kamil Pooran

Kamil Pooran will be one of the most intriguing batters to watch from the West Indies camp. The right-hander has received his maiden T20I call-up after an impressive campaign in the 2026 Caribbean Premier League.

Pooran scored 273 runs in eight CPL innings at a strike rate of 159.64, earning recognition from the West Indies selectors.

His inclusion is part of West Indies’ effort to build a strong core of players for the next T20 World Cup cycle. The five-match series against India therefore represents a significant opportunity for the young batter to make an immediate impression at the international level.

Pooran’s aggressive approach could be particularly useful against India’s spin-heavy attack. India have Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel in their squad, meaning the West Indies batter could face considerable spin through the middle overs.

The biggest challenge for Pooran will be translating his domestic T20 success into international cricket. Playing against India in their own conditions will be a major test, but his CPL numbers suggest that he possesses the attacking ability required to make an impact.
