Three reasons why dropping Marnus Labuschagne was the right decision

George Bailey-led national panel of selectors picked the 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against West Indies. The team will tour the Caribbean Islands for a three-match Test series and a three-match T20I series. They are coming off a 5-wicket defeat against South Africa in the recently concluded 2023-25 WTC final.

The team will be led by the regular skipper Pat Cummins, alongside the senior players, including the likes of the veterans Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith. The series will commence with the first Test in Barbados on June 25, Wednesday. Pat Cummins-led Aussies will be touring the Caribbean islands for the three-match Test series and a three-match T20I series.

Meanwhile, in what seems to be a big change in the squad, the selectors have dropped the star top-order batter Marnus Labuschagne from the Test squad for the series against the Caribbean side.

With that said, here we’ll have a look at the three reasons why dropping Marnus Labuschagne was the right decision.

Current Form

Marnus Labuschagne has been struggling with a poor run of form in the last couple of First-Class games, including a dismal outing in the WTC 2023-25 final against South Africa. He could score only 17 and 22 runs in the first and second innings, respectively.

Besides that, he has only scored a half-century, including two ducks in the six innings of the four First-Class games before the WTC 2023-25 final against South Africa. So, it could be one of the big reasons for dropping him from the squad for the upcoming assignment against the West Indies.

Giving Cameron Green more chances in the top order

Dropping Marnus Labuschagne might involve Cricket Australia’s intention to promote and give more chances to the star all-rounder Cameron Green in the star top-order. Green is known for his aggressive batting approach, and he could be a crucial asset for his side in the crucial three-match Test series against the Caribbean side.

Apart from the unexpected failure in the WTC 2023-25 final against South Africa, Green has been on a brilliant run of form with the bat in the four First-Class games. He has scored two centuries and a half-century in the seven innings of the last four First-Class games.

Providing a time of improvement for Labuschagne

Dropping Marnus Labuschagne from the Test squad might also be a motive to give space and time to the star batter to improve his performance and the areas he needs to work on.

“Marnus at his best can be an important member of this team,” chair of selectors George Bailey said. “He understands his output hasn’t been at the level we, or he, expects. We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively,” said Chair of selectors, George Bailey, after the announcement of the squad for the West Indies tour.
