Former Australian left-arm pace bowler Mitchell Johnson retired as one of the greatest bowlers in the history of the game. The man from Western Australia was known for his serious pace and rib-snorters with the ball. 

Mitchell Johnson played 73 test matches for Australia and picked 313 wickets with the ball. The former Australian pacer had taken 12 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket hauls in test cricket. 

The Ashes Series brought out the best out of Mitchell Johnson as his record shows. Mitchell Johnson picked 87 wickets from 19 test matches in Ashes cricket. Here we take a look at the top three spells of Mitchell Johnson in Ashes cricket.

7/40 versus England – Adelaide Oval – 2013

Chasing a huge 571 run first innings score, England were bowled out for 172. Mitchell Johnson did the damage as he took career best 7/40 in the first innings. Johnson began by dismissing English skipper Alastair Cook for 9. 

The left-arm seamer then got rid of the lower order which included the big wicket of Ben Stokes for 1. Matt Prior, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, and Monty Panesar were the other wickets for the left-arm fast bowler.  

6/38 versus England – Perth – 2010

Batting first Australia were bowled out for 268 in the 1st innings thanks to 61 by Michael Hussey and 53 by Brad Haddin. Local boy Mitchell Johnson was the top scorer with the bat scoring 62 runs. Mitchell Johnson turned the wrecker in chief with the ball as he picked his then career best figures of 6/38. 

The Australian pace ac first dismissed Alastair Cook, Jonathon Trott, Kevin Pietersen, and Alastair Cook. The fifth wicket arrived in the form of Chris Tremlett bowled for two and James Anderson was wicket number six for two runs as Johnson finished with 6/38 with the ball to give his team a lead of 81 runs. 

5/69 versus England – Leeds – 2009

England were bowled out for 102 in their first innings in Leeds with Peter Siddle taking 5/21. Australia responded with 445 to take an overall lead of 343 runs thanks to Marcus North’s 110 and 93 from Michael Clarke. 

Armed with a huge lead, the Australians won the test by an innings and 80 runs. Mitchell Johnson swept the English batting aside to pick 5/69 with the ball. His victims were Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Graeme Swann, and Graham Onions.
