Pathum Nissanka

Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka is one of the key players to watch against England. He has been in sublime form in the World Cup and currently stands among the leading run-scorers of the tournament. In the first two games against Ireland and Oman, he managed just 24 and 13 runs respectively. However, he turned things around in spectacular fashion in the third group-stage match against Australia.

Chasing a competitive target, Nissanka displayed composure and class, scoring an unbeaten 100 and guiding Sri Lanka to a memorable victory at Pallekele. His innings was filled with confident stroke play as he dominated the Australian bowling attack. In the final group-stage game against Zimbabwe, he continued his good form with a solid 62, although it came in a losing cause. With 199 runs in four matches, Nissanka’s form at the top will be crucial for Sri Lanka in the Super Eight stage. His ability to anchor the innings and accelerate when required makes him a vital asset in this high-pressure encounter.

Kusal Mendis

Kusal Mendis is another important player to watch in this clash. He has been one of Sri Lanka’s most consistent batters in the tournament and is among the top run-getters. He has played a key role in stabilising the innings and building partnerships.

He began the tournament with an unbeaten 56 against Ireland, followed by 61 against Oman and 51 versus Australia, registering three consecutive fifties. Although he scored just 14 against Zimbabwe, his overall impact in the group stage has been significant. Mendis has shown great maturity at the crease, rotating the strike effectively and accelerating when needed. In addition to his batting contributions, the wicketkeeper-batter has also been sharp behind the stumps, providing balance to the side. His experience and consistency will be vital for Sri Lanka against a strong England bowling attack.

Maheesh Theekshana

Maheesh Theekshana is another player who could make a major impact in Match No. 42. The right-arm spinner has been economical throughout the tournament and has consistently put pressure on opposition batters. He picked up 3/23 against Ireland and followed it up with 2/11 against Oman, showcasing his control and ability to strike in crucial moments.

He claimed 1/37  against Australia and went wicketless versus Zimbabwe, but he continued to bowl tight spells. Although he has taken six wickets in the tournament so far, his economy rate and ability to build pressure have been equally valuable. Overall, in 80 T20Is, Theekshana has taken 77 wickets, highlighting his experience at the international level. On Sri Lankan pitches that traditionally assist spinners, his spell in the middle overs could prove decisive in this crucial Super Eight clash.
