The New Zealand team once again showcased their consistency in ICC tournaments during the T20 World Cup 2026, progressing till the final of the competition with disciplined performances across departments. Known for their balanced squad and tactical clarity, the Black Caps relied heavily on their experienced core players during crucial stages of the tournament.
However, throughout their campaign, a few talented squad members did not receive as many opportunities as expected. Whether due to team combinations, tactical decisions, or the strong form of first-choice players, some cricketers remained largely on the sidelines despite having the potential to make an impact.
Here is a look at three players underutilised by New Zealand during the T20 World Cup 2026:
-
Kyle Jamieson

The tall all-rounder from New Zealand was part of the New Zealand squad in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026. But, since the World Cup was being played in the subcontinent conditions, Jamieson’s role was reduced by a significant margin.
He only got a chance to play a single game throughout their campaign, against Canada at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. He picked up a single wicket, whereas did not get the chance to bat in the contest. This became his only appearance in the competition. Despite his talent, due to team combinations, he could not get further chances.
2. Cole McConchie

The off-spinner from New Zealand was underutilised by them in the T20 World Cup 2026 in many ways. The Kiwis sometimes preferred using the services of captain Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi over him.
McConchie had a brilliant outing in the semifinal 1 against South Africa at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, as he picked up two important wickets of Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickleton. But, to many people’s surprise he was dropped from the playing XI against India citing team combination despite the presence of multiple left-handers in India’s squad. If he had gotten more chances, he could have made more impact.
-
Daryl Mitchell

Despite being included in all of New Zealand’s nine matches, Daryl Mitchell never arrived at the T20 World Cup 2026. The Kiwi right-hander was nowhere near his best in the competition, with him failing to register even a single fifty plus score tells a story.
He could have been promoted up the order to have more impact with the bat. Mitchell is one of New Zealand’s best players against spin, especially in Indian conditions, so it was an opportunity missed from New Zealand’s side.
