Veteran fast bowler Trent Boult is celebrating his 35th birthday today (July 22). When you hear the name Trent Boult, the first thing that comes to the mind is intimidating swing and first over wicket. No matter how good a batter you are, if you are playing against New Zealand, be prepared to face the new ball threat from this left-arm pacer. 

Having represented the Black Caps in all three formats, the Rotorua-born cricketer has taken 611 wickets in 253 matches. He has played 114 matches in ODIs and has taken 211 wickets at an economy of 5.0 and an average of 24.39. As the Kiwi great celebrates his special day, let’s take a look at his top three performances in the 50-over format.

3. 5/21 vs India, Hamilton, 2019

India were crushed in the fourth ODI of India tour of New Zealand in 2019. Batting first in Hamilton, the visitors were bundled out for just 92 runs as Boult and Colin de Grandhomme wreaked havoc. The left-arm seamer grabbed five wickets for just 21 runs to win the Player of the Match award. The hosts chased down the target in just 14.4 overs and clinched a massive eight-wicket win.

2. 5/27 vs Australia, Auckland, 2015 (ODI World Cup)

Boult played a key role in New Zealand’s nail-biting win over Australia in the group-stage of the 2015 ODI World Cup. His 5/27 helped the team restrict the Aussies to 151/10 in the first innings. The Black Caps struggled to overcome the target in a low-scoring chase, but somehow managed to win by one wicket.

Boult recorded his best ODI figures in the second match of the 2017 West Indies tour of New Zealand. The Kiwi batters set up a huge target of 326 runs and Boult ensured that the opposition batters never got off to a strong start in the chase. He grabbed three wickets in the first six overs and went on to claim four more in his 10-over spell. The Windies were bowled out for a mere 121 runs as NZ won by 204 runs.
