Ranking Steven Finn’s top 3 performances in ODIs

Born on April 4th, 1989, Steven Finn was ranked as the next big thing in England cricket. The tall six-foot-seven-inches Middlesex bowler was known for his generating steep bounce and pace which often proved to be nemesis of the batters.

He initially made his debut for England in Test format in 2010 against Bangladesh. Although he had a successful run in the Test format, he was also picked up in the English white-ball setup against Australia in 2011.

In international cricket, injuries are often the major roadblocks for a fast bowler and for Steven Smith, it was also the same case as his career couldn’t take off the way it was expected to because of several injuries. It was because of him that the rule of calling a delivery ‘No-ball’ if the bowler dislodges the non-strikers’ stumps while completing his bowling run-up came into play as he used to do it often.

However, despite the ups and downs in his career, he managed to take 102 wickets for England in the 69 matches he featured in. In this article, we will deep-dive into his ODI career and highlight Steven Finn’s top 3 performances in ODI cricket:

3) 4/34 vs Pakistan – Abu Dhabi – 2012

After getting swept off in the Test series, England was looking for redemption in the ODI series. Alastair led the way by playing a sensational innings of 137 runs taking England to a competitive total of 260 runs. Although it wasn’t a big score, Steven Finn dismantled the Pakistan batting line-up and got them packed up for just 130 runs.

Finn ended up with the figure 4/34 in his quota of 10 overs. He broke the back of Pakistan’s run chase by picking up their top 4 batters and never let them in for the chase. In the end, Pakistan had lost by 130 runs and Finn ended up with his third-best career figures in ODI.

2) 5/71 vs Australia – Melbourne –2015

Steven Smith 2nd best ODI figures came in the opening game of the 2015 ODI World Cup against arch-rivals Australia. Although England lost the match Steven Finn’s 5 for 71 came as the only shining light for England in the game.

It was a special game for Finn as apart from getting a five-wicket haul, he also became the eighth bowler to get a hat-trick in the World Cup. Finn dismissed Glenn Maxwell, Brad Haddin, and Mitchell Johnson in the last three balls of the innings to get to his hat-trick.

1. 5/33 vs India – Brisbane – 2015

Steven Finn’s career-best figure in ODI cricket came against India in the triangular series just before the 2015 ODI World Cup. It was just a year after he was sent back home mid-way through an Ashes tour, but he redeemed himself and announced himself with a bang.

It was only after an inspiring return that he ran through the Indian batting order in a tri-series match. The Indian batting line-up skittled for a paltry 153 runs and Finn was the wreaker-in-chief with figures of 5 for 33 runs. England didn’t have any problem whatsoever in chasing down the target as they won by 9 wickets within 28 overs. Steven Finn was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ for his sensational bowling performance.
