In the last few years of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Ruturaj Gaikwad has emerged from an unknown prospect to the captain of his side. The right-handed batter was purchased by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the Indian Premier league season in 2020. As the tournament moved to the UAE during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gaikwad caught the attention of the fans. 

Then aged 23, Gaikwad made his debut in the match against Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah. Gaikwad batting at number five was out for a first ball duck as Chennai Super Kings lost the game by 16 runs. In the very next season which played in two halves due to the pandemic, Gaikwad showed his talents with the bat scoring over 600 runs. 

In the next few years, Gaikwad became a key member of the side as he was promoted to open the batting. In 2024, MS Dhoni stepped down as the captain of the side and Gaikwad was named as the new skipper. CSK, who had come into the season as the defending champions finished outside the playoff places as they lost the final game of the season to RCB.

3. 99 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad – IPL 2022

Young batter Ruturaj Gaikwad came close to scoring his second hundred in the league during a game against Hyderabad. It was Chennai that batted first and posted a huge score of 202 on the board. Gaikwad and fellow opener Devon Conway added 182 runs for the first wicket as Conway scored 85 off 55 balls. Gaikwad, scored 99 off 57 balls with six fours and sixes before falling to T Natarajan and missing out on his ton by one run. 

2. 101 not vs Rajasthan Royals – IPL 2021

Chennai Super Kings had won their fourth IPL title in 2021 and one of the key reasons was Gaikwad’s batting. The right-handed batter scored 635 runs which included 101 not out in the game against Rajasthan Royals in Abu Dhabi. Gaikwad scored his runs off 89 balls with the help of nine boundaries and five sixes to help CSK post 189 on the board. Rajasthan won the game by seven wickets as future CSK star Shivam Dube top scored with 64 not out and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 21-ball 50.  

1. 108 not out vs Lucknow Super Giants – IPL 2024

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s second ever IPL ton came in the 2024 season in a game against Lucknow Super Giants. CSK skipper scored 108 not out from just 60 balls with 12 fours and three sixes. Shivam Dube’s 66 helped Chennai reach 210 on the board from their 20 overs. Lucknow stunned the fans in Chennai as they romped home to an easy win by six wickets thanks to Marcus Stoinis’ 124 not out which came off 63 balls. This was the second time that Gaikwad had scored a century in the IPL and ended up on the losing side.
