Ranking KKR’s Top 3 captains of all time

Ajinkya Rahane was announced as the 9th captain of KKR in their history. The experienced player has led Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and will play a key role in KKR’s title defense. He is KKR’s full-time captain for an entire season after the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Brendon McCullum‌, Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan, Shreyas Iyer, and Nitish Rana led them in different seasons from 2008 to 2024.

While Jacques Kallis led KKR in two matches in 2011, it was mostly due to Gambhir’s absence. Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan led KKR in 2020 and 2021. His stint as a skipper in his maiden season did not go well as KKR could not qualify for the playoffs. His 2021 season seemed to have a similar story in the first half. In the Indian leg, KKR found themselves in the bottom half of the table. But, there was a massive turnaround in the second leg.

In the UAE leg, KKR came to their own and performed well, thanks to spin friendly tracks. Morgan made the best use of spinners and promoted Venkatesh Iyer up the order, which was fruitful. Morgan ensured KKR reached their first IPL final since 2014. He led KKR in 24 matches, won 11 of them, lost 12, and one of their matches had no result. He had a winning percentage of 45.83%.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer is one of the only two KKR skippers to have won the IPL. He was instrumental in KKR winning their third title in the IPL 2024. Iyer personally did not have to do much as a batter. However, he got all the players along and ensured everyone gave their best to make KKR a strong unit.

Iyer led KKR in 2022 and 2024. While 2022 wasn’t a good season for KKR, 2024 was a great season. It was KKR’s best season, as they turned out to be one of the most dominant IPL teams of all time. He led KKR in 29 matches, and won 17 of them. He lost only 11 matches and had a win percentage of 58.62%.

Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir is easily the greatest KKR captain. He isn’t just KKR’s greatest skipper, but is amongst the greatest IPL captains. He was the reason KKR started to not just make it to playoffs, but also won multiple titles. He ensured KKR won their maiden title by beating CSK in their backyard in Chennai in the 2012 final, something none expected.

In the 2014 season, KKR had lost 2 of their first 7 matches and were in the last two spots in the points table. Gambhir got things along by promoting Robin Uthappa as an opener. It paid dividends as KKR had arguably the greatest comeback to win the title. Gambhir led KKR in 122 matches and claimed 69 wins. He lost 51 matches including a tie and a no result. Gambhir had a winning percentage of 56.55%.
