Predicting top 3 performers from India for 2nd Test

The second Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England will take place at Edgbaston, Birmingham from July 2. With the visitors trailing 0-1 in the five-match series, the Shubman Gill-led team is looking to bounce back after a disappointing defeat in Leeds. Despite centuries from KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Gill, India’s lower-order collapse and poor bowling effort and fielding cost them the game. In reply, England chased down 371 with five wickets in hand.

1. Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant was brilliant in the first Test at Leeds. He hammered twin centuries – 134 in the first innings and 118 in the second. His approach put pressure on England’s bowlers and once again proved why he is such an important part of the Test setup, especially overseas. With the Edgbaston surface expected to test the batters as the game progresses, Pant’s style and ability to dominate pace bowlers will be critical. If he can replicate his Headingley heroics, India will have a strong chance of winning the game.

2. KL Rahul

The right-handed batter, KL Rahul, continued his solid form in English conditions. The Indian opener scored 42 in the first innings and followed it up with a 137 in the second. In doing so, he became the first Indian opener to score three Test hundreds in England, surpassing legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid. He has now scored nine Test centuries, eight of which have come outside India. With the team needing a strong start at Edgbaston, Rahul will have to tackle the new ball well alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.

3. Mohammed Siraj

While Jasprit Bumrah made headlines with a fifer in the first Test, India’s second pacer, Mohammed Siraj, went wicketless and looked out of rhythm. However, with Bumrah could miss the second Test amid workload concerns. If that happens, Siraj will lead India’s bowling attack. Interestingly, Siraj was spotted having an extended net session with the bat ahead of the Edgbaston Test. Siraj has prior experience of bowling in English conditions, including memorable spells in the 2021 series. With his ability to swing the ball and bowl long spells, Siraj can trouble England’s top order.
