Predicting ENG’s Playing XI for the 3rd ODI against South Africa

The ODI series between England and South Africa is delicately poised after a thriller at Lord’s, where England fell just five runs short in a high-scoring chase. All eyes turn to Southampton’s Rose Bowl, where England enter the third ODI determined to restore parity in the contest. England’s batting unit looked encouraging in the second ODI, while the bowlers were inconsistent and will have some tough decisions to make. Let’s take it position by position and have a look at the potential XI.

Openers

Jamie Smith

Jamie Smith’s failure to score in the second ODI brought England’s opening vulnerabilities into sharp focus. A different opener could be an option, but the management may still be of the mindset that Smith is having trouble adjusting and will find his way. Smith is pretty aggressive with his stroke play in domestic cricket, and if he gets himself settled, he should be capable of a brisk start.

We were also disappointed by Ben Duckett’s slow 14 off 33 balls (in a chase of 331), but, once again, Duckett is technically gifted and capable in both pace and spin; it’s hoped he can accelerate early in Southampton against South Africa’s new-ball bowlers to put them under pressure.

Middle Order

Joe Root

Joe Root was England’s rock at Lord’s, finishing with a perfectly paced 61 from 72 balls. I don’t think anyone rotates the strike or holds the innings together like Root can, and nothing can feel frantic when he is at the crease, so it is priceless to have him in high-pressure chases.

Jos Buttler was just as destructive in the latter stages as he finished 61 from 51 balls at a strike rate of 119.60; Buttler is also a key player as a finisher and as an experienced cricketer, especially in the death overs. Buttler’s counter-attack against Ngidi and Bosch was literally turning the game back in England’s favour and just showed how vital he was to the third ODI.

All-Rounders

Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks

Bethell’s fluent 58 off 40 deliveries, hitting at 145, underlined his knack for accelerating when it matters most. He provides the perfect flexibility balance for England. Bethell’s bowling was expensive (1/61 from 5 overs), but his batting impact means he has earned his place in the XI.

Similarly, Will Jacks gave solid support, scoring 39 from 33 balls. Despite short spells of off-spin not worrying the South African batters, he adds versatility and balance to an already very strong squad. If either Bethell or Jacks fires together, they will be key for England when they head to Southampton.

Bowlers

Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer reminded us of his match-winning ability – taking 4/62 at raw pace and accuracy, delivering at critical moments – such as Rickelton and Breetzke’s dismissals. Archer is England’s biggest weapon with the ball, and the Rose Bowl can expect Archer charging in with the new ball again.

Adil Rashid’s 10 overs yielded 2 wickets for just 33 runs, making him one of the game’s top performers. On a batting-friendly surface, his control and variations kept South Africa relatively in check.
