Predicting Durham’s Playing XI for the North Group against Derbyshire in the Vitality Blast 2025

Durham hosts Derbyshire in an important North Group fixture of the Vitality Blast 2025 at the Riverside Ground. Fresh from a narrow 6-run loss to Leicestershire, Durham will ideally want to return to winning ways to keep their aspirations to qualify for the knockout stages alive. With so much at stake, ensuring they get the right XI is vital.

Openers

Alex Lees

Durham’s opening partnership is crucial in creating the tone of the innings, and Graham Clark and Alex Lees seem to be in a good position to do so based on current form. Clark’s knock of 29 runs off 13 balls against Leicestershire showed he is capable of providing Durham with playtime in the innings. He already has a higher strike rate than 220 in that innings, and he is capable of being aggressive but also chooses the correct shots.

Lees, the captain, played to be able to consolidate the innings, scoring 21 runs at a rate of over 110. He will bring his experience in consolidation in combination with Clark’s aggressiveness. They’re roles are established; Clark will attack from ball one, and Lees will consolidate and keep the run-rate flowing

Middle Order

Will Rhodes

The middle order of Durham is likely to settle and build partnerships, especially with some early wickets falling at the top of the order. When it comes to the middle overs, few are as dependable as Kasey Aldridge and Will Rhodes. Aldridge played a pivotal innings, 44*, from 27 balls, which proved not only his ability to cope under pressure but also to accelerate when needed. Aldridge was explosive in his innings, making up 4 boundaries and 3 sixes, which showed he can play at multiple gears and contribute as a middle-order batsman.

Rhodes scored 43* from 22 balls, and fell in the death overs at a very impressive strike rate of nearly 195. Both players are quality stroke players who can rebuild an innings after a wicket falls early and can finish strongly; both players can play.

All-Rounders

Ben Raine

All-rounders can affect the match’s result in both innings, and James Neesham and Ben Raine are ideal examples of this at Durham. Neesham contributed 8 runs, and while his batting was subdued, he is still a key player with the potential to change a game with either bat or ball. Raine’s bowling performance was impressive, taking 5 wickets for just 23 runs.

His batting was not as long as Neesham but he does provide good depth as a number 8 batsman. Catching both batsmen at the same time allows the team to keep a balance on the team, allowing Durham to have total flexibility in the batting order and many options in the bowling department.

Bowlers

Tom Scriven

Durham’s bowling has some formidable strike bowlers, with leading the attack along with Ben Raine, and then add Tom Scriven. As evident from Raine’s five wickets in his last game, which he achieved with terrific control at a great economy of 5.75, he’s got good deliveries, he can get breakthroughs, and can control the rate. In T20 Cricket, the ability to swing and provide pressure is vital.

Tom Scriven was also economical with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for only 25 runs and an economy of 6.25, meaning he will also be a great asset when the bowling side needs Compounding – wins a contest in not allowing the batting side to succeed in scoring runs – that is effectively Sabotaging;

Durham’s predicted XI features explosive batting, solid middle-order stabilizers, impactful all-rounders, and fast bowlers. Hopefully, players like Clark, Lees, Aldridge, Raine, and Scriven are all in form as Durham will need the firepower and balance to challenge Derbyshire, and help them earn a much-needed win in this Vitality Blast game.
