India travelled to Zimbabwe in September 1998 to play a three-match ODI series. The two teams were scheduled to play a single Test match. After winning the three-match ODI series by 2-1, the two teams met in a one-off Test, which was scheduled to be played from October 7 in Harare.
India won the toss and elected to bowl and dismissed Zimbabwe for 221 runs, as no batter managed to make more than 50 runs. Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble took three wickets each.
Rahul Dravid played a knock of 118 runs in the first innings for India. However, no other batter managed to make a decent contribution as India were bundled out for 280 runs and earned a lead of 59 runs. Henry Olonga was the pick of the bowlers for Zimbabwe and took a five-wicket haul.
In the second innings, the openers, Gavin Rennie and Craig Wishart, provided a solid start and added 138 runs for the first wicket. Murray Goodwin (44 runs) and Andy Flower (41 runs) also made important contributions to help Zimbabwe 293 runs on the board, setting India a 235-run target.
The Indian batters faced the same difficulties that Zimbabwe faced in their first innings and had a poor start as they lost their first four wickets for 37 runs. No batter managed to cross the 50-run mark as India were bundled out for 173 runs, and Zimbabwe won by 61 runs.
It was Zimbabwe’s second win in Test cricket. Their first win came against Pakistan in 1995, when they won by an innings and 64 runs.
