OTD: When Was Heath Streak Born? Remembering the Zimbabwe Cricket Legend

On March 16, Heath Streak was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Streak went on to become one of the greatest cricketers in Zimbabwe’s history, representing and captaining the Zimbabwe national cricket team across formats. He was a dependable fast bowler, capable lower-order batter and was known for his consistency and commitment to Zimbabwean cricket.

Streak remains Zimbabwe’s all-time leading wicket-taker in Test cricket, claiming 216 wickets, and also tops the list in ODI cricket with 239 wickets. He is the only Zimbabwean cricketer to have taken more than 100 Test wickets. In addition to his bowling achievements, he also made valuable contributions with the bat, becoming one of the few players from the country to achieve the all-round double of 2,000 runs and 200 wickets in ODIs.

In Tests, Streak recorded seven five-wicket hauls, the most by a Zimbabwean bowler. His performances were particularly significant during what many regard as the golden era of Zimbabwe cricket between 1997 and 2002, when the team competed strongly against top international sides.

Streak’s professional journey began in domestic cricket when he made his first-class debut for Zimbabwe B against a touring Kent side in 1993, at the Harare Sports Club. One of the most unique moments of his domestic career came during the 1995-96 Lonrho Logan Cup, when he played alongside his father Denis Streak for Matabeleland in the final against Mashonaland Country Districts. This marked the first instance in over thirty years of a father and son playing together in the same first-class match.

Internationally, Streak made his ODI debut against South Africa in 1993. Just a month later, he made his Test debut during Zimbabwe’s tour of Pakistan. He quickly announced himself on the big stage by taking eight wickets in the second Test at Rawalpindi. Streak finished his debut Test series with 22 wickets at an average of 13.54, earning the Player of the Series award, still the most wickets taken by a Zimbabwean bowler in a single Test series.

In 1996, during a Test against New Zealand in Hamilton, Streak became the fastest Zimbabwean bowler to reach 50 Test wickets, achieving the milestone in just 11 matches. Another historic moment came in 2000 during a Test against England at Lord’s Cricket Ground, where he took 6/87, becoming the first and only Zimbabwean to claim a five-wicket haul at Lord’s and earning a place on the venue’s prestigious honours board.

Streak also played in multiple major ICC tournaments. He made his World Cup debut in the 1996 Cricket World Cup and was part of the Zimbabwe side that reached the Super Six stage of the 1999 Cricket World Cup for the first time. In 1999, he also became the fastest Zimbabwean bowler to take 100 ODI wickets.

His leadership qualities saw him appointed captain of Zimbabwe in 2000 for both Test and ODI formats. Although he stepped down in 2001, he returned to lead the team again in 2002. During his captaincy tenure, Streak guided Zimbabwe in major tournaments including the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy, 2002 ICC Champions Trophy, and the 2003 Cricket World Cup. He remains Zimbabwe’s most successful Test captain with four wins and the second-most successful ODI captain with 18 victories.
