OTD | West Indies posted the lowest T20I total of 45 by a Full Member team against England in 2019

Having lost the first T20I of the series in 2019, the West Indies headed into the second game desperately wanting to win it. However, their hopes were shattered as the Jason Holder-led side became the face of a humiliating defeat at the hands of England.

Winning the toss, the Windies invited the host nation to bat first. England lost a few early wickets as they were reduced to a score of 39 runs for four wickets within the powerplay. However, a partnership between Joe Root, who was marking his comeback to the T20I setup, and Sam Billings rescued them from embarrassment.

The two combined for an 82-run stand and took England’s total to 114 when Root was dismissed after scoring 55 runs in 40 balls that included seven boundaries. Billings, on the other hand, went on to score 87 runs in 47 balls that included 10 boundaries and three sixes. Their efforts helped the home team set a good total of 182 in the first innings.

In the chase, the visitors had a horrible start as the openers, Chris Gayle and Shai Hope, only added 12 runs before the former had to depart. Hope also followed him in the same over as David Willey got rid of both the openers.

The trouble continued for the West Indies as they lost four more wickets inside the powerplay. Darren Bravo, Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran, and Fabian Allen were all dismissed before the sixth over of the second innings had concluded.

Eventually the two-time T20 World Cup champions were all out for a meagre total of 45 runs in under 12 overs. Shimron Hetmyer and Carlos Brathwaite were the only two players that managed double-digit scores, with each scoring 10 runs in 11 balls and four balls, respectively. As for England, Chris Jordan took a four-wicket haul, while Willey, Adil Rashid, and Liam Plunkett took two each.
