OTD| West Indies destructive left-hander Evin Lewis was born in 1991

Hard-hitting West Indian opener Evin Lewis is celebrating his 32nd birthday today. Lewis is very similar to Chris Gayle in style and the left-hander considered him as his mentor as well. He has been in and around the national team set-up but failed to make a consistent mark on the international stage.

Evin Lewis plays for Trinidad and Tobago in domestic cricket and caught the wider attention with his performances in domestic cricket. His exploits in domestic cricket earned him his maiden national call-up when he was selected in the West Indies squad for the T20 World Cup in 2016. In the same year, he played his first One-Day international match against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi.

Inconsistent Destructor

Evin Lewis’ inconsistency has prevented him from being a permanent feature in the West Indies squad. The left-hander has played 57 One-Day internationals where he has scored 1847 runs at an average of 36.94 including 4 centuries and 10 half-centuries. In T20 internationals Lewis has represented West Indies in 53 matches. He has managed to accumulate 1465 runs at an average of 29.89 with an explosive strike rate of 151.97.

Lewis plays his cricket in a certain way where he attacks the opposition regardless of the situation which makes him special but, on many occasions, it has backfired as well. He featured for West Indies in 2022 at the T20 World Cup for the last time and has been unable to find his way to come back in the squad since then. In the ODI format, he has not found favour for around two years which has been a cause of concern for him.

The left-hander would be hoping to perform in domestic cricket which can earn him a call-up for the national team which is scheduled to play the T20 World Cup at home in 2024. It would be a special occasion for Caribbean cricket and Lewis would not want to miss the bus.
