OTD | Wayne Parnell was born in 1989

Wayne Parnell, an aggressive left-arm pacer from South Africa, was born on this day, July 30, 1989. Parnell was able to intimidate the opposition with his fast-swinging stock deliveries. However, Parnell did not have much success at the international level due to his inconsistency and injury issues.

The 35-year-old, who was born in Port Elizabeth, debuted with Eastern Province in the first division in October 2006. Parnell took a hat-trick against Western Province in his fifth first-class game. He played in the 2006 World Cup in Sri Lanka as a member of South Africa’s Under-19 team, and he later captained the side in the 2008 tournament in Malaysia.

On January 13, 2009, Parnell played his first T20I match against Australia. Shortly after, on January 30, 2009, he played his first ODI match, also against Australia. A year later, on January 14, 2010, he made his Test debut against England as South Africa looked to incorporate his speed and swing into their potent attack.

Despite injury setbacks and competition for spots, Parnell has taken 173 wickets for South Africa in 135 international matches as of March 2023, keeping him relevant in all three formats. In his international career, he has taken 99 wickets in ODI, 15 in Tests, and 59  in T20Is.

With 11 wickets, Parnell was the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy’s top wicket-taker (Golden Ball winner). He was also part of the 2009 T20 World Cup ‘team of the tournament’ for helping South Africa reach the semis.

Parnell has performed well in several of the T20 leagues across the world. He has represented multiple franchises, including Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in the IPL, Barbados Royals in the CPL, and Worcestershire and Durham in county cricket. He also captained Pretoria Capitals in SA20.

Parnell’s South Africa career was momentarily put on hold when he accepted a Kolpak deal and played in England. However, he returned to the Proteas setup once the Kolpak arrangements ended.

Early promise, steady contributions, and a significant presence in T20 competitions throughout the world have all been hallmarks of Parnell’s journey. His mobility and left-arm pace have had a significant impact on South African cricket, despite injuries and form denying him a longer Test career.
