Trent Boult was born on July 22, 1989, in Rotorua in New Zealand. Over the years, Boult has played for a number of franchises in various T20 leagues. He is one of the few players who play for the Mumbai Indians franchise globally. He was picked by the franchise in the IPL 2025 Auction and plays for the franchise in ILT20, MLC, and SA20.

Boult has been one of the best performers in the Indian Premier League. In 119 innings, Boult has taken 73 wickets in the powerplay at an average of 26.88. Only Bhuvneshwar Kumar has picked more wickets than him in the powerplay. Only four left-arm pacers have taken more than 100 wickets in the IPL. Boult is the leading wicket-taker among them, having picked 143 wickets at an average of 26.20.

Boult started his IPL career with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2015 and played till 2016. In 2017, he was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders and went on to play for the Delhi Capitals (fka Delhi Daredevils) in the next two seasons. Before the start of the 2020 season, Boult was traded to the Mumbai Indians and played for two seasons for the team. He played for the Rajasthan Royals franchise from 2022 to 2024. In 2025, MI managed to bring Boult back to the squad.

Boult was a part of the New Zealand team that finished as the runner-up during the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup. He finally lifted an ICC trophy when New Zealand defeated India in the World Test Championship final in 2021. He was the third-highest wicket-taker for the Blackcaps in the WTC cycle and finished with 39 wickets in 10 games.

Boult retired from international cricket after New Zealand was knocked out of the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. He played 78 Tests, 114 ODIs, and 61 T20Is for New Zealand and picked a total of 611 wickets at an average of 25.60. He has taken the fourth-highest number of wickets by a left-arm pacer
