OTD Trailblazers clinched their first Women’s T20 Challenge title in 2020

OTD Trailblazers clinched their first Women's T20 Challenge title in 2020

The Trailblazers lifted their maiden Women’s T20 Challenge title, defeating Supernovas by 16 runs in the final at Sharjah on November 9, 2020. Led by Smriti Mandhana, the Trailblazers overcame a strong Supernovas unit to make history in a tightly contested final.

The 2020 edition was the second season of the Women’s T20 Challenge, featuring three teams, Trailblazers, Supernovas, and Velocity. The Trailblazers had won one of their two group-stage games, defeating Velocity but losing to Supernovas. However, thanks to a superior Net Run Rate (NRR), they advanced to their first-ever final, having missed qualification in 2019.

Batting first in the final, the Trailblazers posted 118/8 in 20 overs. Captain Smriti Mandhana led from the front with a classy 68 off 49 balls, an innings laced with five fours and three sixes. However, she found little support from the other end as wickets fell regularly. Supernovas’ spinner Radha Yadav produced a sensational spell, claiming 5/16, the best bowling figures in the tournament’s history, and ensuring the target remained modest.

Despite the relatively low total, the Sharjah pitch began to slow down in the second innings, aiding the Trailblazers’ spinners. They applied consistent pressure, turning what seemed like a below-par total into a defendable one.

Supernovas’ chase never gathered momentum. Openers Chamari Athapaththu and Jemimah Rodrigues started cautiously but were soon undone by the disciplined bowling of Sophie Ecclestone, who struck in the second over. From there, the spin duo of Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Deepti Sharma maintained tight lines, stifling the scoring rate. Deepti accounted for both Rodrigues and Taniya Bhatia, while the experienced Salma Khatun (3/18) delivered crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, battling a hamstring injury sustained in the first innings, top-scored with 30 runs, but her limited mobility restricted her ability to rotate strike and chase down the rising required rate. The Supernovas eventually finished at 102/7, falling short by 16 runs.

The victory gave Trailblazers their first title, while Radha Yadav was named Player of the Series for her consistent performances, claiming eight wickets in the tournament.
