New Zealand’s finest fast bowler, Tim Southee, was born in Whangarei, Northland, on this day in 1988. He first burst onto the international scene as a 19-year-old after coming off being Player of the Tournament at the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. He debuted in Tests against England in Napier and picked up a five-wicket haul and later smashed 77 off 40 balls with nine sixes.
Over the next 17 years, Southee became one of New Zealand’s most reliable players. His partnership with Trent Boult is one of the best new-ball pairings of the modern era. His notable outings with the ball include 7 for 64 against India in Bengaluru in 2012, which is the best figures by a New Zealand bowler in India. In the following year (2013), he returned with 10 for 108 at Lord’s. In the 2015 ODI World Cup, Southee clinched a seven-fer against England, making it the best ODI figures by a New Zealand player.
Southee finished his Test career with 391 wickets from 107 Tests, alongside 221 ODI and 164 T20I wickets, placing him among New Zealand’s greatest fast bowlers. He captained the team in Tests in 2023, briefly stepping into the leadership role after Kane Williamson’s exit. With the bat, he contributed over 2000 Test runs, including seven fifties and more than 90 sixes.
In the IPL, he played for five teams, including Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. He picked 47 wickets at an economy of 8.66 across 54 games.
After retiring from international cricket in 2024, Southee took up coaching roles, including a stint with the England men’s team as fast-bowling coach. Recently, he returned to the IPL as KKR’s bowling coach for IPL 2026.
“KKR has always felt like home to me, and it’s an honour to return in this new role. The franchise has an incredible culture, passionate fans, and a great group of players. I look forward to working closely with the bowlers and helping the team achieve success in IPL 2026,” he said on his appointment.
