OTD | Shaun Marsh was born in 1983

Shaun Marsh was born on July 9 in 1983 at Narrogin in Western Australia. The southpaw became a regular in the Australian side in the mid-2010s and was an integral part in the longer formats for the rest of the decade. He is the son of Geoff Marsh, who was also an Australian cricketer and won the 1987 World Cup.

Marsh played for teams like Punjab Kings, Glamorgan, Melbourne Renegades, Perth Scorchers, Western Australia, and the Australian national side. He had some impressive numbers in First Class Cricket and List A format, but had to wait for his chances due to established players in the national side.

Marsh made his ODI debut in 2008 and scored a ton on his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2011. He played 38 Tests, 73 ODIs, 15 T20Is, and 71 matches in the IPL. The southpaw made a name for himself in the IPL in the very first season, where he won the Orange Cap with Punjab Kings.

Marsh scored 2265 runs in Tests at an average of 34.32, including six hundreds and 10 fifties. In ODIs, he scored 2773 runs at an average of 40.78, at a strike rate of 81.42, including seven hundreds and 15 fifties. In T20Is, he scored 255 runs at an average of 18.21 and a strike rate of 102.82. Across formats, the Australian scored 5293 runs in 155 innings at an average of 35.76.

In the IPL, Marsh scored 2477 runs in 69 innings at a decent average of 39.95 and a strike rate of 132.74, including a solitary hundred and 20 fifties. The star player retired from all forms of cricket in January 2024 even when he was performing well for his side in the Big Bash League.
