OTD: Prithvi Shaw was born in 1999

OTD Prithvi Shaw was born in 1999

Prithvi Shaw was born on November 9, 1999 in Thane, Maharashtra and rose to fame as a 14-year-old sensation when he smashed 546 runs off 330 balls for his school in a Harris Shield match in Mumbai in 2013, one of the highest scores ever recorded in youth cricket. His remarkable feat made him a household name overnight and marked the beginning of his journey toward professional cricket.

Shaw was part of the India Under-19 squad that won the Youth Asia Cup in Sri Lanka in November 2016. He soon made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in the 2016–17 semi-final against Tamil Nadu, where he scored a century in the second innings to lead his side to victory. At just 17, he became the youngest player to score a century on Duleep Trophy debut, breaking a long-standing record held by Sachin Tendulkar.

In 2018, Shaw captained the India Under-19 team to victory in the ICC U-19 World Cup, cementing his reputation as one of India’s brightest young talents. His success at the junior level earned him an IPL contract with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for INR 1.2 crore. Under the mentorship of Ricky Ponting, he impressed with a strike rate of 153.12 in his debut season.

His consistent performances for India A, both in England and at home, led to his Test debut for India against the West Indies in Rajkot in November 2018. Shaw announced himself in grand style, becoming India’s youngest Test centurion on debut and only the second-youngest overall after Tendulkar.

However, Shaw’s international career hit a roadblock due to poor fitness and disciplinary issues. Having played five Tests (339 runs), six ODIs (189 runs), and one T20I, he was sent back to domestic cricket to regain form. Ahead of the 2025–26 season, he switched from Mumbai to Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 75 and 222 in his first two matches. Determined to make a comeback, Shaw is focused on rediscovering his form and fitness to earn a recall to the Indian side.
