Pakistan created history as they defeated Australia in the third ODI of the three-match series to clinch the series 2-1 on November 10, 2024, and registered their maiden series win Down Under in any format.
Australia had started the series well, defeating Pakistan in the first ODI in Melbourne by two wickets in a tight game. Despite scoring 203 runs after batting first, Pakistan bowlers showed great heart to make Australia work for every run, as Haris Rauf took three wickets in the narrow defeat.
In the second game in Adelaide, Australia once again fell prey to Pakistan bowlers, as they were bowled out for 163 runs as Haris Rauf took 5/29 and Shaheen Afridi took three wickets. Pakistan won the game by nine wickets as Saim Ayub slammed 82 and Abdullah Shafique made 64*.
It all came down to the third and final ODI that was played on this day, November 10, in Perth. Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and chose to bowl first, showing faith in his pacers on the bouncy track in Perth.
And his pacers did not disappoint, as Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah took three wickets each and Haris Rauf took two to fold Australia for 140 runs in 31.5 overs. Australia were reduced to 88/6, and 22 from Matt Short and 30 from Sean Abbott helped the hosts save some face.
But Pakistan chased down the total with ease. Saim Ayub made 42, Shafique got 37, Mohammad Rizwan amassed 30*, and Babar Azam notched up 28* as Pakistan won the game by eight wickets and pocketed the series 2-1.
After losing both of their previous series in Australia, 5-0 in 2009 and 4-1 in 2016, this was Pakistan’s first series victory in 22 years. In another low-scoring series in 2001, Pakistan overcame a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 under the captaincy of Waqar Younis.
