OTD | Pakistan became only the second team to lose by an innings after declaring in 2016

Pakistan lost the Test by an innings and eighteen runs after declaring their first innings after amassing 443 runs for nine wickets in Melbourne. However, they were dismissed for 163 in the second innings in response to Australia’s first-innings score of 624.

Azhar Ali became the first Pakistani batsman to reach a double century in Australia with an undefeated 205 runs in the opening innings of the Melbourne Test. He became the first Pakistani player to achieve a double century in a losing match, nevertheless, following the loss. Mohammad Hafeez’s 197 in Sharjah against New Zealand was Pakistan’s best score in a defeat.

When Australia declared for 624/8 in the morning of the fifth day, Steve Smith added to his 17th Test century to remain undefeated at 165, with Nathan Lyon’s wicket falling last. Mitchell Starc, fired for 84, was sent to Smith’s strong company. Australia was able to take an 181-run advantage as a result. With 207 runs given up in his 41 overs, Yasir Shah became the first bowler in history to give up 200 runs twice in a single year. Earlier this year, he also gave up 213 runs in the Manchester Test match against England.

Pakistan got off to a terrible start in their reply, losing two wickets in less than 10 runs. Sarfaraz Ahmed (43) and Azhar Ali (43) were the only ones who put up a real fight. Everyone else felt easy. Pakistan was eventually bowled out for 163 runs. Before a hilarious collapse on the last day cost them the victory and handed it to Australia, Pakistan fought hard to come close to winning.

Pakistan has now lost five straight Test matches, including two against Australia and one against New Zealand. It was Pakistan’s eleventh loss to Australia. They became the second side to lose the Test by an innings after declaring the first innings with 400 on board.
