OTD: New Zealand men secured their first Test win in India in 36 years in 2024

New Zealand travelled to India to play a three-match Test series in October 2024. The first match of the series started on October 16 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. India won the toss and elected to bat.

The Indian batters failed miserably and were bundled out for a mere 46 runs Matt Henry picked up five wickets, while William O’Rourke picked up four wickets. It was the first time India got all out for less than 50 runs in India.

Rachin Ravindra led the charge with the bat for New Zealand with his knock of 134 runs off 157 deliveries while Devon Conway missed a well-deserved century and made 91 runs. Tim Southee made 65 runs off 73 deliveries. No batter apart from these three scored more than 40 runs for the Blackcaps. But it was enough for the team to pile up a total of 402 runs before getting dismissed in the 92nd over. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each.

In the second innings, Rohit Sharma (52 runs), Virat Kohli (70 runs), and Rishabh Pant (99 runs) scored a half-century each. Sarfaraz Khan was the highest scorer for the team and made 150 runs. The lower order could not do much, and India was all out for 462 runs in the second innings. Henry and O’Rourke took three wickets each for New Zealand.

New Zealand needed 107 runs to win the match in their second innings. The batters took 27.4 overs to win the game by eight wickets. Rachin remained unbeaten on 39 runs in the second innings and won the Player of the Match award.

The match was concluded on October 20, and New Zealand registered their first Test win in India in 36 years. Before this match, New Zealand last won a Test match in India in November 1988. New Zealand won the remaining two games in the series and became the first team to defeat India in a Test series since 2012.
