OTD: Netherlands knocked out South Africa from 2022 T20 World Cup

OTD Netherlands knocked out South Africa from 2022 T20 World Cup

Netherlands produced a shock on three years ago on November 6 as they secured a 13-run win against South Africa in what was both teams’ final group fixture in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Other than a second consecutive win for Netherlands, the result of the contest meant the Proteas did not make it to the knockouts.

Netherlands had a productive powerplay as they scored one more (48) than the most South Africa had conceded in the first six overs in the tournament. The first maximum of the innings came in the 10th over, one over after the first wicket had fallen. Keshav Maharaj picked up a couple of wickets in consecutive overs to have Netherlands at 112/3 in the 15th over.

Anrich Nortje ended his four-over spell by conceding only 10 runs in his quota. Some late hitting by Colin Ackermann (41* off 26) meant Netherlands ended up with 158/4 on the board. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi did not complete their entire quota as the two were expensive on the day, giving away 37 and 35 runs in three overs each.

Temba Bavuma was dismissed for a run-a-ball 20 on the final ball of the powerplay. Just as South Africa seemed to have made a move on, Brandon Glover struck to get rid of Rilee Rossouw (25 off 19). Glover struck twice in his second over to change the complexion of the contest.

Only five runs came in the 18th over of the run-chase in which Heinrich Klaasen departed. This left 36 to be chased from the last two overs. With only three wickets left in the tank, South Africa fell well short at the end. The Temba Bavuma-led unit ended with five points with Pakistan and Bangladesh yet to play for a place in the semi-final. This meant that they were knocked out of the competition following losses in their last two matches.
