OTD: Netherlands created history with victory over South Africa in 2023 World Cup

The Netherlands faced South Africa in the 15th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 On October 17. The Netherlands made history by beating South Africa for the first time ever in an ODI. The game was played in Dharamsala and was reduced to 43 overs per side because of rain.

The Dutch team batted first and faced a tough start as they lost four wickets for 50 runs inside the first 20 overs. Their trouble continued as the team had posted a total of 140 runs for the loss of seven wickets. 

But then, their captain, Scott Edwards, played a great innings and remained unbeaten on 78 runs off 69 deliveries and got good help from Roelof van der Merwe (29 off 19) and Aryan Dutt (23 off 9). This effort helped the Netherlands reach a total of 245 as Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Kagiso Rabada took two wickets each.

South Africa struggled while chasing the target and lost the first four wickets for 33 runs. David Miller scored 43 runs off 52 deliveries, while Keshav Maharaj made 40 runs off 37 deliveries. No other batter managed to score more than 30 runs for the team. The South African team was all out for 207 runs, losing the match by 38 runs.

Logan van Beek was the pick of the bowlers for the Netherlands and took three wickets for 60 runs in 8.5 overs; Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe, and Bas de Leede picked up two wickets each, while Colin Ackermann took one wicket.

It was the Netherlands’ third win in the ODI World Cup. Also, it was the first time the Proteas lost an ODI game against an Associate nation. Edwards won the Player of the Match award for his batting performance.
