Mushfiqur Rahim is undoubtedly the best Bangladeshi wicketkeeper-batter to have played international cricket. He is a feisty campaigner who has produced several match-winning innings across formats for the Bangla Tigers. Mushfiqur is also a safe wicketkeeper, who has excellent footwork and agility to compensate for his diminutive frame.
Mushfiqur holds the record for the highest score by a Bangladeshi batter in a Test innings. In the second Test between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, which was played from November 11 to November 15, 2018, he smashed an unbeaten 219 off 421 balls in the first innings.
The game was played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Bangladesh were under pressure after losing the first Test in Sylhet by 151 runs. However, skipper Mahmudullah won an important toss in the second Test and decided to bat first. Bangladesh lost their first three wickets for 26 runs before Mushfiqur and Mominul Haque added a record-shattering 266-run stand to put the hosts in the ascendancy.
During his unbeaten knock, Mushfiqur hit 18 boundaries and one six, finishing with a strike rate of 52.01. He surpassed Shakib Al Hasan’s score of 217, which he registered against New Zealand in Wellington in 2017. Mominul also made 161 as Bangladesh declared at 522/7. In reply, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 304 after Taijul Islam bagged a five-for. Mushfiqur was dismissed for seven in the second innings as Bangladesh were looking to extend their lead in quick time.
The hosts eventually declared at 224/6, setting the Chevrons an improbable target of 443 runs. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 224, as Mehidy Hasan Miraz took a five-wicket haul. Bangladesh won the match by 218 runs to level the series 1-1. Mushfiqur was deservingly named Player of the Match for his heroic knock in the first innings that played a key role in Bangladesh’s victory.
