OTD: Mumbai Indians clinched their fifth IPL title in 2020

OTD Mumbai Indians clinched their fifth IPL title in 2020

Mumbai Indians (MI) won their fifth IPL championship on November 10, 2020. Notably, the competition was moved to Dubai due to COVID constraints, andMI won the record-breaking title by defeating Delhi Capitals by five wickets.

Because of COVID restrictions in India, the whole IPL 2020 season took place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The players faced new difficulties and circumstances as a result of the location move. In any case, the Mumbai Indians (MI) prospered in the uncharted territory.

Mumbai Indians, who qualified for the final after winning  nine out of their 14 matches and defeating Delhi Capitals in the first qualifier, were aiming for their second consecutive title, having won the 2019 edition of IPL as well.

MI faced DC in the final on November 10, 2020, in Dubai, and DC captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bat first. However, the decision backfired in a huge way as MI’s Trent Boult removed Marcus Stoinis and Ajinkya Rahane early, and Jayant Yadav dismissed in-form opener Shikhar Dhawan for 15 runs.

But then Shreyas Iyer played a captain’s knock, scoring 65* in 50 balls with six fours and two sixes. He added 96 runs with Rishabh Pant, who made 56 in 38 balls with four fours and two sixes. Delhi Capitals only managed to post 156/7 in 20 overs. For MI, Trent Boult took 3/30, while Nathan Coulter-Nile accounted for two wickets.

In response, captain Rohit Sharma led from the front, scoring 68 in 51 balls, while Quinton de Kock made 20 runs. Ishan Kishan managed 33* in 19 balls to guide MI to the win in 18.4 overs as they made 157/5 and won the IPL 2020 final by five wickets.

Boult won the Player of the Final, and Rohit Sharma became the first captain in the tournament history to lift the IPL trophy five times. It also highlighted their dominance beyond the odd-numbered years, with titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and then 2020.
