OTD: Morne Morkel was born in 1984

Morne Morkel was born on October 6, 1984, in Vereeniging, Transvaal, in South Africa. He is the current bowling coach of the Indian cricket team. Morkel started his coaching career as the bowling coach of the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. He was also the bowling coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team for a brief period in 2023.

Morkel played 86 Tests for South Africa and finished with 309 wickets to his name at an average of 27.66. He was the fifth Proteas bowler to take 300 wickets in Test cricket. His 300th wicket came in his final series against Australia in 2018. Morkel took 15 wickets in the three-match series at an average of 19.60, and South Africa defeated Australia on home soil for the first time since 1969-70.

Morkel took 188 wickets in 117 ODI games at an average of 25.32, including two five-wicket hauls in his ODI career. His ODI debut came against Asia XI with Africa XI in 2007. He won the Player of the Match award five times and the Player of the Series award once.

In T20Is, Morkel picked up 47 wickets in 44 games at an average of 25.34. He played a total of 17 matches in the T20 World Cup and was a part of the squad that featured in the World Cup from 2007 to 2014. He took 24 wickets in the T20 World Cup at an average of 18.83.

Morkel was picked by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2008 auction for a price of USD 60,000. He moved to the Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) in 2011 and played for the franchise till 2013. Morkel took 25 wickets in IPL 2012 and won the Purple Cap. He was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team that won the IPL in 2014. Morkel took a total of 77 wickets at an average of 27.12 in 70 matches in the IPL.
