1989 proved to be a significant year for cricket enthusiasts, as two certified legends of the game – Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis – made their debut that year in the international arena.
Waqar Younis earned his maiden Pakistan cap during an ODI clash against the West Indies at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah on October 14, 1989. He bowled four overs, sharing the new ball with Wasim Akram, and gave away just 14 runs. Pakistan won the thrilling clash by 11 runs, defending a 251-run target.
On the other hand, Sachin Tendulkar made his international debut on November 15, 1989, in a Test match against Pakistan at the National Stadium in Karachi. Incidentally, this was also Waqar’s maiden appearance in Test cricket. The Master Blaster scored a 24-ball 15 while batting at No. 6 in the first innings. Younis cleaned him up, going on to bat a four-for. Tendulkar did not get to bat in the second innings as the match ended in a draw.
In four Tests he played in 1989, Tendulkar scored 215 runs at an average of 35.83, including two half-centuries. Meanwhile, Younis accounted for six wickets in two Tests at an average of 39.50. Further, in 12 ODIs, the right-arm fast bowler picked up 12 wickets at an average of 25.91.
Tendulkar went on to become one of the finest batters to have played the game. He retired from international cricket in November 2013 after scoring 34,357 runs across the three formats. The 52-year-old is the leading run-getter in the international circuit.
On the other hand, Younis, 53, scalped 373 wickets from 87 Tests and 416 scalps from 262 ODIs during his illustrious career. He retired from all forms of cricket in April 2004.
