OTD | Marlon Samuels took West Indies over the line to win their first World T20 title

The West Indies’ historic first title triumph in the T20 World Cup came on 7th October, 2012. They defeated Ireland by eight wickets in the group stage, however in the next game, they were defeated by Australia by 17 runs using the Duckworth-Lewis system. They overcame England by 15 runs in the Super 8s, fell to Sri Lanka by 9 wickets, and won a Super Over against New Zealand following a draw. They earned a spot in the semi-finals where they overcame Australia to book a final against hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo.

When Marlon Samuels produced a 56-ball 78 versus Sri Lanka in the 2012 final in Colombo, it stood out as one of the most legendary displays in T20 World Cup history. When Samuels took the charge, West Indies were two wickets down. But his amazing knock ensured that the team scored 137/6 on a sluggish pitch in Colombo. To make matters better, he took a wicket during his four overs at the cost of just 15 runs.

West Indies were defending a modest goal of 138 in the final match against Sri Lanka when Narine showed up with a burst of 3/9 from 3.4 overs to spook the hosts in Colombo. He picked off the dangerous-looking Nuwan Kulasekara and the vital wicket of Mahela Jayawardene before putting the finishing touch on the situation with Lasith Malinga.

Marlon Samuels produced another great knock in the T20 World Cup final. This time, in the 2016 finale against England, West Indies was struggling after having fallen to 11/3 in the first three overs in their chase of 156. Samuels, who batted at number three, went to bat till 85 and was unbeaten, which helped his team reduce the total during the last over.
