On this day, back on April 5, 1991, Australia’s star cricketers Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh became the first pair of twins to play together in a Test match for the country. Notably, the duo achieved a great feat against the West Indies in the third Test match, which was played in Trinidad. However, the match ended up being a draw but remained memorable in the history of cricket.
However, the Waugh brothers eventually went on to play around 108 Test matches together in their cricketing career. Notably, Steve Waugh made his debut in the Boxing Day Test match against India back in 1985, but Mark Waugh made his debut against England back in 1991 at The Oval in London. In addition, Steve Waugh has played 168 Test matches and 325 ODIs, while Mark Waugh has played 128 Test games and 244 ODIs in his career.
Speaking about their first game here, it was West Indies skipper Viv Richards who won the toss and invited visiting sides to bat first in the game. Notably, after being sent to bat first, Australia was able to post 294 runs before being bowled out in the game. Star batter Geoff Marsh failed to give the team a great start, as he was only able to make 10 runs, but Mark Taylor made 61 runs to give the team a great start.
However, David Boon made 27 runs, while skipper Allan Border was able to pile up 43 runs. Meanwhile, Steve Waugh made 26 runs from 54 balls, featuring two fours, while Mark Waugh made 64 runs from 181 balls, including three boundaries, which boosted their middle order and helped them post 294 runs in the opening inning of the game.
However, during the chase, the Windies were only able to get 227 runs thanks to the batting displays of Richie Richardson, Jeff Dujon, and Curtly Ambrose, who tried to reach near the total. Meanwhile, Australia’s second innings ended on a score of 123, and the match was drawn.
