OTD: Mark Boucher was born in 1976

Legendary South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher was born in East London on December 3, 1976. Boucher went on to become one of the most successful wicketkeeper-batters in the history of the game.

Boucher made his Test debut in 1997 against Pakistan at Sheikhupura, coming in as a last-minute replacement for Dave Richardson. He immediately caught attention with his sharp glove-work. He faced challenges in his early years, especially during the 1998 tour of England, where swing conditions exposed him. However, he worked on improving his skills and soon became South Africa’s first-choice wicketkeeper. He later became the quickest to reach 100 dismissals in Tests.

Boucher finished with 999 international dismissals. He holds the record for the most dismissals (555) and the most catches (532) in Test cricket. He was also the first wicketkeeper to complete 500 catches in Test cricket. With the bat, he scored 5515 Test runs, including five centuries. His highest Test score of 125 came while he was playing as a nightwatchman.

During the start of his career, he shared a 185-run ninth-wicket stand with Pat Symcox against Pakistan in 1998, rescuing South Africa from a tough position.

Boucher also played 295 ODIs, hammering 4686 runs, and recording 403 catches and 22 stumpings. He smashed a 44-ball century against Zimbabwe in 2006, the second-fastest ODI hundred at that time. Later that year, he hit an unbeaten 50 to seal South Africa’s famous chase of 434 against Australia.

Despite being one of South Africa’s most celebrated players, Boucher never captained the national team, though he served as a dependable deputy to Graeme Smith. His career came to an unfortunate end in 2012 when a freak eye injury from a flying bail forced him to retire immediately. He ended his international career with 998 wicketkeeping dismissals, just two short of the unprecedented 1000-dismissal mark. After retirement, he moved into coaching, later taking charge of the Titans, the South African national team, and the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
