OTD | Maqsood Ahmed, the first man to be stumped on 99 in a test match was born in 1925

Former Pakistan player Maqsood Ahmed was born on this day in 1999. He is mainly remembered for his unique record of getting out on 99 in a Test. He was the first man to be stumped on that score in a Test match. Maqsood had a long first-class career and represented Pakistan in several Test matches in his international career.

Maqsood Ahmed made his international debut in 1952 when Pakistan toured India for the first time. The first Test of the series was played in Delhi and Maqsood represented Pakistan for the first time in that Test. He made his international debut in the later phase of his career and could play only 16 Test matches for Pakistan. However, he had a considerably long first-class career. The right-hander played 85 matches in his first-class career. He had 3815 runs to his name in first-class cricket at an average of 31.52. Whereas, in international cricket, he could not replicate that performance as he could only amass 507 runs. His highest score in international cricket was 99 which he scored against arch-rivals India in 1955. He was stumped by Naren Tamhane on Subhas Gupte’s delivery. Maqsood Ahmed could not reach the three-figure mark ever again in his career.

He was also a handy bowler in first-class cricket and picked up 124 wickets at an impressive average of 27.86. However, his international career could not last long and he played his last Test match against New Zealand in 1955. But he did not hang up his boots and continued to play first-class cricket. Eventually, his first-class career came to an end in 1964. Maqsood Ahmed was one of the earlier figures in Pakistan cricket who helped it grow from its infancy and will always be remembered for that contribution.
