OTD: Joe Root Became the 14th Batter to Reach 10,000 Test Runs

OTD: Joe Root Became the 14th Batter to Reach 10,000 Test Runs

June 5, 2022 was a landmark day in the career of Joe Root and an important moment in Test cricket history. On the fourth morning of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, Root became the 14th batter to reach 10,000 Test runs. The milestone arrived during an innings that perfectly reflected the qualities that had defined his career: patience, technical assurance and an unwavering commitment to the demands of the longest format.

England began the day chasing 277 for victory and still required 61 runs with five wickets in hand. Root had resumed unbeaten overnight and was already guiding his side through a difficult position. The defining moment came when he clipped Tim Southee into the leg side for two runs, bringing up both his century and the 10,000-run mark. It was a fitting stroke for a batter whose game has been built on timing, placement and control rather than brute force.

By reaching the landmark, Root became only the second England player after Alastair Cook to enter Test cricket’s most exclusive batting club. He was the 14th player overall to achieve the feat and the first since Younis Khan crossed the mark in 2017. The list he joined included some of the greatest names the game has produced, among them Sunil Gavaskar, Allan Border, Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Kumar Sangakkara.

The achievement was significant not only because of the number itself but also because of the speed with which Root got there. He reached 10,000 runs in his 218th Test innings, making him the fastest England batter to the milestone and one of the quickest overall in the history of the format. While several players arrived there in fewer innings, Root became the fastest in terms of time elapsed since debut, a reflection of both his consistency and England’s demanding Test schedule.

An unusual coincidence added another layer to the occasion. Root reached 10,000 runs at exactly 31 years and 157 days of age, the same age at which Cook had reached the landmark years earlier. The pair therefore became the joint-youngest players to enter the 10,000-run club. It was one of cricket’s more remarkable statistical quirks and further linked England’s two greatest Test run-scorers.

What made the innings even more memorable was its impact on the match. Root remained unbeaten on 115 as England completed a five-wicket victory, giving Ben Stokes a winning start as Test captain and launching a new era for the side. Far from being a personal milestone achieved in a losing cause, it was an innings that directly influenced the result and demonstrated Root’s value as England’s premier batter.

Looking back, the significance of that day has only grown. Root has continued to add heavily to his tally and further strengthen his standing among the finest Test batters of his generation. Yet June 5, 2022 remains the moment when years of excellence were formally recognised with a place among the game’s most prolific run-scorers. For England cricket, it was the celebration of a modern great. For Test cricket, it was the arrival of another member of one of the sport’s most exclusive clubs.
