OTD Ireland's Amy Hunter broke Mithali Raj's record to become youngest women centurion

On October 11, 2011, Ireland Women faced Zimbabwe Women in the fourth ODI of the four-match series. It was the first ODI series between Zimbabwe and Ireland. Zimbabwe had won the first game, and Ireland won the next two. Zimbabwe won the toss in the fourth game and elected to bowl.

Leah Paul and Gaby Lewis opened the innings for Ireland and added 40 runs before Paul was dismissed. Amy Hunter joined Lewis in the middle. Hunter had made her ODI debut in the first game of the series and has failed to score more than five runs in her first three outings. Hunter and Lewis added 104 runs for the second wicket.

Lewis was dismissed in the 28th over after scoring 78 runs off 86 deliveries. Hunter reached her maiden century in the 44th over and became the youngest centurion in ODIs. Hunter had turned 16 on that very day and scored her first international century on her birthday. She broke Mithali Raj’s record, who scored her maiden century when she was 16 years and 205 days old. Mithali scored her ODI century on her debut against Ireland in 1999.

Hunter remained unbeaten on 121 runs off 127 deliveries, and Ireland finished with 312 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets. Zimbabwe scored 227 runs for the loss of eight wickets and lost the match by 85 runs. It was the fourth time Ireland won an ODI series since making their debut. Also, it was the first series win for Ireland away from home.

Chetna Pagydyala of the USA scored a century at the age of 16 years and 177 days against Zimbabwe on October 28, 2024. She broke Mithali Raj’s record of being the youngest batter to score a century on debut in women’s ODI.
