OTD | India’s star batter Shubman Gill was born in 1999

The Prince of Indian Cricket, Shubman Gill was born on September 8, 1999. The young Indian batter has gained popularity in such a short time. Now, he has cemented his place in the team and the selectors back him for every tournament possible. Keeping the injuries aside, Gill has been a consistent member of the team and has performed well. 

He recently captained India for the first time in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, where they won the series 4-1. Even after losing the first match, the comeback was the best thing that happened to the young Indian team. Gill was the highest run-scorer of the series as well. Moreover, in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, he captained the Gujarat Titans, but the team didn’t perform well. 

Since it was his first year as a skipper, he did his best and also performed well which was a key takeaway from the team. He has played in 25 Test matches and scored 1492 runs at an average of 35.52. Within these 25 matches, he has already scored four centuries and six half-centuries which proves what kind of a player he is. If we talk about ODI cricket, he has played 47 matches and scored 2328 runs at an average of 58.20. 

He’s the fastest player to reach 2000 runs in 38 innings and also holds the record for the youngest cricketer to score a double century at the age of 23. This is the reason why he’s a consistent member of the team. The selectors have a lot of faith in him and hence, are looking forward to seeing him score more runs in the future. Additionally, he has played in 21 matches and scored 578 runs at an average of 30.42. He has also scored one century in T20Is.
