After three rain-shortened days, India’s First Test Series win in Australia finished in a draw at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the fourth and final match. Although they have been visiting Australia since 1947, India has never won a series there. It all changed this time, though, when Virat Kohli won the first Test in Adelaide and the third Test in Melbourne, leading his team to a 2-1 series triumph.
India lost the second Test match in Perth due to some dubious team selection on a field that many believed would help with bounce and pace. The first-ever Boxing Day Test victory had brought India to Sydney. India had a 2-1 lead and could not have lost the series, and it didn’t seem likely that Australia would recover from the crushing defeat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to share the series 2-2.
In just his second Test match, Mayank Agarwal scored 77 to set the foundation for the remainder of the Indian batting lineup. Before he could do much damage to the Australians, Virat Kohli, who only scored one hundred in the series, fell victim to a carefully thought-out trap. However, the series’ top scorer, Cheteshwar Pujara, had another memorable innings. Pujara had already achieved two hundreds prior to SCG. However, that was not enough for him. Prior to the Australia series, Pujara was India’s second-best batsman and was left off the team for the first Test match in England.
In Australia, Pujara improved even more and overtook Virat Kohli in the run-scoring rankings. The series’ best batting conditions had been offered by Sydney, and the reliable No. 3 wasn’t going to lose out. Patient, determined, and relentless Pujara hit a sophisticated 193 before Rishabh Pant, who has made headlines this Australian summer because to his constant teasing of Tim Paine, hammered his way to an undefeated 159.
Pant outscored Kohli to finish the series as the second-highest run scorer. He was the only Indian wicketkeeper to reach 100 runs in Australia and the fourth to reach 150 or more in Test matches. Their heroes once again were India’s pacers. Five-wicket hauls were awarded to Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, while Ishanr Sharma’s exploits in Adelaide, Perth, and Melbourne will be remembered for years to come.
