Over the years, India and Pakistan have faced many fierce matches. But if we pick one of the best matches, it has to be the 1996 World Cup quarter-final, which was played on 9th March 1996 in Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Every cricket fan was on toe as the match was interesting till the last ball. This was their second meeting in the World Cup. During the 1992 World Cup at Australia, India defeated Pakistan by 43 runs.

India won the toss and elected to bat first. Navjot Sidhu and Sachin Tendulkar opened the batting attack for India. Both the batters had a decent start as they put on a partnership of 90 runs for the first wicket. However, Ata-ur-Rehman drew the first blood as he got the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar. He removed Sachin for 31 runs while Navjot Sidhu kept adding runs to the scoreboard.

Navjot Sidhu managed to score 91 runs before getting out to Mushtaq Ahmed. His 91 runs helped India to reach the target of 288 runs at the loss of 8 wickets. Waqar Younis and Mushtaq Ahmed were the only two bowlers who got two wickets each. Going to chase the target that was set by India. Pakistan opener Saeed Anwar and Aamer Sohail put on a solid partnership, which led to the foundation for other batters.

Aamer Sohail scored 55 runs before getting out to Venkatesh Prasad. However, after getting a good start from the openers, other batters failed as they failed to take control of the game. Pakistan batters didn’t have an answer for Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble’s bowling as they picked three wickets. India bowlers got control of the game as they defeated Pakistan by 39 runs. Pakistan could score only 248 runs and saw themselves on the losing side. By losing this game, India crushed Pakistan’s hopes of entering the Semi-finals.
