OTD in 2016 | India's first international match on American soil, where a world-record total of 489 runs was scored

On August 27, 2016, cricket history was made at Lauderhill in Florida during the first T20 International of a two-match series between India and the West Indies. The game was notable not only for its electrifying atmosphere but also for setting a world record for the highest total runs scored in a T20I match.

A staggering 489 runs were accumulated across the 40 overs, highlighting an extraordinary display of batting prowess from both sides. The West Indies, known for their explosive T20I batting, took full advantage of the conditions. Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that would test his bowlers’ mettle against a formidable West Indian lineup.

West Indies openers Johnson Charles and Evin Lewis made the most of the opportunity, launching an aggressive assault on the Indian bowlers. The duo established a solid opening partnership of 126 runs before Charles was dismissed for a rapid 79 from 33 balls, courtesy of Mohammed Shami.

Evin Lewis continued the onslaught, forming a dynamic partnership with Andre Russell. The pair scored 78 runs in just 36 deliveries, with Lewis achieving a remarkable century off only 48 balls. Lewis’s innings featured five boundaries and nine sixes, propelling the West Indies to a formidable total of 245 runs from their 20 overs.

KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma led India

In response, India faced a challenging task. The chase began poorly as Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for just 7 runs and Virat Kohli fell for 16, both out to Dwayne Bravo. However, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma revived the Indian innings with a thrilling partnership

Rahul delivered a standout performance, scoring 110 runs off 51 balls and becoming the second player to achieve a T20I century on American soil. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma supported Rahul magnificently, contributing 62 runs from 28 balls, including four boundaries and four sixes. Despite their remarkable efforts, India fell short by just one run. Dwayne Bravo played a crucial role in defending eight runs in the final over, securing a narrow victory for the West Indies.
