OTD in 2012 | South Africa Beat England 2-0 to Become the No. 1 Test Side

Hashim Amla has made history as the first South African cricketer to score a triple century in Test cricket. Amla was unbeaten on 311 during the first Test against England at The Oval on Sunday. South Africa declared their first innings on 637/2.

During the 1st Test match of South Africa against England the host nation England won the toss and elected to bat first. Batting first England posted a total of 385 runs as England opener Alastair Cook scored 115 runs from 295 balls. In reply South Africa posted a huge total of 637 runs as South Africa captain Graeme Smith scored 131 runs and Hashim Amla scored 331 runs from 529 balls and Jacques Kallis scored 182 runs.

Hashim Amla became the first player from South Africa to score a triple hundred in Test cricket. Hashim Amla batted for 13 hours as South Africa posted 637 runs. South Africa totally dominated England bowlers as Jacques Kallis also scored 182 runs as the top order batters scored hundred in 1st innings. As the score went to 637 runs South Africa captain Graeme Smith declared at tea after witnessing Amla and Kallis pile on the runs without mercy.

In the second innings of the match South African bowlers got a quick breakthrough as Veron Philander got Alastair Cook on duck and later England lost their top four quickly, reaching 102-4 at the close, needing another 150 to avoid an innings loss. Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara continue at the crease, knowing they must bat well into the last day if England is to avoid going behind 1-0 in a three-Test series to identify the world’s finest side.

But things got worse for England as they got all out for 240 runs as South Africa won the match by an innings and 12 runs. Due to Hashim Amla’s performance he was awarded with the Man of the Match award. Later South Africa won the three match series by 2-0 and became the No.1 Test team in Test cricket.
