OTD in 2004: The lowest total was set today by Zimbabwe when Sri Lanka bowled them for just 35

On this day, back in 2004, the Zimbabwe cricket team set the lowest total in ODI history on their home soil. Notably, on April 25, 2004, at the Harare Sports Club, in the third ODI of five matches of the series, Zimbabwe were bundled out for just 35 runs, the lowest in ODI history. However, the hosts went on to lose the series 0-5 against Sri Lanka.

Speaking about the game here, it was Sri Lankan skipper Marvan Atapattu who won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first in the game. Notably, after being sent to bat first, the side had an awful start as star opening batters Stuart Matsikenyeri and Brendan Taylor were out for 4 runs each. However, following him, Dion Ebrahim was looking great, but he was also departing after scoring seven runs.

Meanwhile, skipper Tatendu Taibu and Elton Chigumbura, who were expected to score runs, were dismissed for ducks. Following them, Alester Maregwede and Vusi departed after scoring 2 and 4 runs. However, Prosper Utseya and Tinashe Panyangara were dismissed for ducks, while Douglas just had 4 runs to his name, which bundled them out for 35 runs.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s star bowler Chaminda Vaas had scalped four wickets and later got the Player of the Match award. In addition, Dilhara Fernando and Farveez Maharoof went to get two wickets each, which helped them bundle out the hosts for such a narrow score.

However, during the chase, Sri Lankan opening batter Saman Jayantha was able to get 28 runs from 26 balls, featuring four boundaries and one six, to help his side chase down the total. On the other hand, legendary batter Mahela Jayawardene also scored an unbelievable three runs after Russell Arnold departed for six runs in the game. The visiting side put an end to their misery by achieving the target in just 9.2 overs for just one wicket loss.
