OTD England won an Ashes Test at Lord's after 75 years in 2009

England won the second Test of the Ashes in 2009 against Australia at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. This was their first win at the historic venue after 75 years. Their previous win at Lord’s had come in June 1934.

In July 2009, Australia were hopeful about continuing their streak at Lord’s. In the previous Test in Cardiff, England had to battle hard to avoid a defeat.

The Three Lions won the toss and opted to bat first on the first morning at Lord’s. Captain Andrew Strauss led from the front as he smashed 161 off 268 balls. His fellow opener Alastair Cook also played well, scoring a fluent 95. James Anderson and Graham Onions added a 47-run partnership for the last wicket to help the home side finish on 425.

In reply, Australia could only manage 215. Michael Hussey top-scored, finishing on 51 off 91 balls. James Anderson was the star of the show, finishing with figures of 4/55. Onions also bagged a three-for.

Having taken a 210-run lead in the first innings, England put Australia to the sword when they walked out to bat for the second time. Paul Collingwood and Matt Prior scored aggressive half-centuries before the hosts declared for 311/6 in just 71.2 overs, scoring at a run rate of 4.35.

Australia were set a huge target of 522 runs in the fourth innings. Michael Clarke played a magnificent knock, scoring 136 off 227 balls. Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson also slammed half-centuries. However, the tourists were eventually bowled out for 406 on the final day of the Test match. Andrew Flintoff hogged the limelight, finishing with figures of 5/92. Graeme Swann also performed well, taking four wickets as England won the match by 115 runs. Flintoff was awarded Player of the Match.
