OTD | England star batter Jason Roy was born in 1990

On this day, July 21, 1990, the cricketing world welcomed one of its most dynamic and explosive batters, Jason Jonathan Roy. Born in Durban, South Africa, Roy moved to England at the age of 10, where he would go on to become a cornerstone of England’s cricket team.

Jason Roy’s journey to international cricket began with his domestic career at Surrey, where his aggressive batting style quickly made him a standout player. He is renowned for his ability to dominate bowlers and set the pace at the top of the order in limited-overs cricket. His skills are not just limited to T20 and ODI formats; he has also shown his mettle in first-class cricket, playing crucial roles for Surrey.

Roy made his Twenty20 International debut against India in September 2014, and his One Day International (ODI) debut followed in May 2015 against Ireland. His fearless approach to batting and ability to score rapidly has made him a vital asset to England’s cricket team.

In his ODI career, Roy has played 116 matches, scoring 4,271 runs at an average of 40, with an impressive strike rate of 105.53. He has 12 centuries and 21 fifties to his name in ODIs, highlighting his consistency and class. In the T20I format, Roy has played 64 matches, scoring 1,522 runs at an average of 24 and a strike rate of 137.61. He has also been a crucial part of the England squad in the shortest format, providing explosive starts that have often set the platform for England’s victories.

World Cup victory with England

One of the defining moments of Roy’s career came in 2019 when he played a pivotal role in England’s historic World Cup win. His aggressive batting at the top of the order was instrumental in England’s success, including a vital performance in the semi-final against Australia, where his quickfire 85 helped England to a resounding victory.

Roy’s career has not been without its unique moments. He was the first batter to be given out for obstructing the field in T20I history. Despite his limited Test career, where he has played just 5 matches and scored 187 runs, Roy’s contributions in the shorter formats have firmly established him as one of England’s premier batters.
