It was on this day, October 26, in 1961, that England registered their first-ever Test win over Pakistan. This was the first test of the three-match series between Pakistan and England, was played at the Lahore Stadium.
Pakistan captain Imtiaz Ahmed won the toss and chose to bat first. Javed Burki slammed 138, Saeed Ahmed scored 72, and Mushtaq Mohammad amassed 76 as Pakistan posted 387/9d in the first innings even as Butch White and Bob Barber took three wickets for England.
England gave an apt reply, scoring 380 runs in their first innings on the back Ken Barrington, who made 139 runs. He was well supported by Mike Smith, who fell for 99 runs. Even the tail wagged with David Allen making 40 runs. For Pakistan, Mohammad Munaf took 4/42.
The second innings was not so good for Pakistan, as they managed just 200 runs, with Afaq Hussain (35*) and Wallia Mathias (32) being the highest scorers. This set England a target of 208 runs for their first-ever win over Pakistan.
Peter Richardson (48), Mike Smith (34), and Captain Ted Dexter (66*) along with Bob Barber (39) took matters into their own hands, as they contributed handsomely as England registered their maiden Test win over Pakistan by five wickets, scoring 205/5.
With the next two tests in Dhaka and Karachi ending in draws, England also registered their maiden Test series win over Pakistan in Pakistan as well.
