OTD | Carlos Brathwaite was born in 1988

West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite was born in Barbados on this day in 1988. His name will be known throughout cricket history for providing the most famous finale to an ICC final. Brathwaite, an all-rounder from the West Indies, blasted England’s Ben Stokes with four sixes in the ICC World Twenty20 2016 final, propelling him to prominence.

Then came the 2019 World Cup, where Brathwaite showed that he had what it takes to become a global superstar. Facing the uphill task of chasing a 292-run target, West Indies found themselves in all kinds of trouble at 164/7. But Brathwaite hammered 101 in 82 balls to take the Windies to 286 runs, losing only by five runs.

He was seen as the next great thing, particularly in white-ball cricket, at the time, and with good cause, but his career did not take off. He played his last game for the West Indies in 2019, and while he had taken a sabbatical from all cricket, he made his return to the T20 format in the PSL last year.

Brathwaite has played three Tests, 44 ODIs, and 45 T20Is for the West Indies, having scored 181, 559, and 310 runs, respectively. A handy medium pacer, Brathwaite also has 43 wickets in ODIs and 31 in T20Is. He has one ODI century and half-century, and his best figures in ODIs are 5/27. Furthermore, in 285 T20 games, Brathwaite has 2385 runs at a strike rate of 135.97 and has bagged 248 wickets at an economy of 8.26.

Although Brathwaite no longer plays for his national team, he has yet to announce his retirement. In the end, his powerful hitting powers were ineffectual. Brathwaite was seen offering commentary after the West Indies failed to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He appears to have sought a new job for himself while not playing cricket.

Whatever happens to Brathwaite, he has immortalised himself in cricket history, thanks to his four sixes that helped the West Indies win the 2016 T20 World Cup and become the first two-time T20 world champions.
