OTD Australia snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in 1987 World Cup match in Indore

Australia faced New Zealand in the 12th match of the ODI World Cup 1987. The match was supposed to be played on October 18 but was postponed for a day due to heavy rain and the two captains decided that they will play the game instead of sharing points. The must-win match for New Zealand took place on October 19 and was reduced to 30 overs per innings.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl. Australia lost their first wicket for just 17 runs before a 117-run stand for the second wicket between David Boon and Dean Jones rescued the team. Jones was the first to depart after scoring 52 off 48 while Boon was dismissed for 87 off 96. Skipper Allan Border made 34 off 28 while Steve Waugh remained unbeaten on 13 runs off eight deliveries as Australia finished with 199/4 in 30 overs. Martin Snedden was the pick of the bowlers for the Blackcaps, taking two wickets for 36 runs in six overs.

Ken Rutherford and John Wright provided a solid start to New Zealand and added 83 runs for the first wicket in 12 overs. Rutherford made 37 while Wright was dismissed for 47. New Zealand lost their second wicket for 94 runs. They lost four more wickets for 71 runs and started to struggle. Martin Crowe remained in the middle till the last over.

New Zealand required seven runs off the last over with four wickets in hand. Crowe, who looked great in the middle, was dismissed for 58 off 48. Waugh, who was bowling the last over, dismissed Ian Smith on the second delivery and the game was practically over for New Zealand.

Only three runs came off the next deliveries and Martin Snedden was run out off the last ball as Australia won the match by three runs. Australia faced England in the final of the tournament and won by seven runs. It was the first time Australia lifted the cup and the start of a success story.
