OTD: Anil Kumble dismissed Andrew Symonds on the second day of the Perth Test to become the first Indian bowler to take 600 Test wickets

One of the greatest match-winners of all time for India, Anil Kumble, scripted history on this day as he entered the 600-wicket club in Test cricket and became only the third bowler to do so. It was a massive achievement and with this record, he established himself as arguably the greatest bowler that India has ever produced. 

Perth Test: Not only about controversies

The Perth test has become infamous for the controversy between Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh but the match was not only about the controversies. Anil Kumble reached the biggest milestone of his career in this match by dismissing Andrew Symonds. 

In the first innings, India made 330 runs courtesy of half-centuries from Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. This total enabled India to fight hard and put the Aussies under pressure in the first innings. The Australian team struggled with the bat as the Indian bowlers put on a combined show that did not let the home team undermine the Indian score in the first innings. 

The Kangaroos were on the back foot in the first innings right from the word go as they lost four wickets even before they could add 50 runs. There was a crucial partnership that was brewing between Andrew Symonds and Adam Gilchrist. The Indian skipper Anil Kumble broke this dangerous partnership by trapping Andrew Symonds who had already scored a half-century. 

Later, Team India wrapped up the Australian first innings for a low total of 212 runs and took a massive lead. This wicket propelled him to the list of elite bowlers and his presence in that list reflected the legendary career of a great player. 

Kumble ended his international career with 619 wickets in his account which was the highest number of wickets for any Indian bowler. He was ahead of any other Indian name by a mile as the second in the list of most Test wickets for India is the veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin with 490 wickets.
